A solvent-free, nickel-catalyzed [2 + 2+2 + 2] cycloaddition of alkynes to synthesize substituted cyclooctatetraene (COT) derivatives has been developed. This mechanochemical approach takes advantage of the frictional energy created by reusable nickel pellets, which also act as the catalyst.
